What is withdrawal-induced bloated belly?
Having a bloated belly is a common occurrence for many who come off psychiatric drugs. Its thought that the roles that GABA and serotonin play in the gut—and the impact that psychiatric drugs, especially benzodiazepines and antidepressants, have on these neurotransmitters—are a part of the reason why this is such a frequently reported symptom. Typically, people report a very swollen or bloated stomach and abdomen, sometimes so swollen that they “appear nine months pregnant”. This is often accompanied by gas, reflux, cramps, diarrhea, or constipation. Individuals also report weight gain. Some describe worsening symptoms after eating a meal.
